19 boys from Southwell Rugby Club have just completed a successful first rugby tour, which involved watching a professional European match on Friday 3rd May at Parc-Y-Scarlets in Llanelli and parading around the pitch pre-match. Following this, on Saturday 4th May the boys participated in a mini tournament with Welsh clubs Loughor, Gowerton & Penarth.
On Sunday 5th May, the tour and indeed the season, was rounded off by a fantastic match against Bargoed, which saw some marvellous free flowing rugby, and ended with a Southwell victory, 34 points to 22.
A number of local businesses were kind enough to support the boys and help make the weekend both a memorable one and a beneficial one for the boys in terms of team spirit and rugby development, but even more importantly, learning respect, responsibility and appropriate conduct whilst representing their club, family and themselves.
Next year the boys will play full pitch, 15-a-side rugby, and this tour was both to celebrate their successes this season and to give them a taste of what 15-a-side, full pitch is like. The Welsh teams at this age group had been playing 15-a-side on a full pitch for over a year already. So, to win the final game of the tour (and the season), was a fantastic achievement, and one they were very proud.
