A very long-serving club stalwart, Grog (Phil) Gordon, was awarded the Gascoines Estate Agents Volunteer of the Month trophy on at the lunch before the game against Nuneaton Old Edwardians on Saturday to mark his outstanding contribution to the club since joining from Bilsthorpe RFC in 1982.
In his introductory comments club chairman, Spud Smith, noted that as a player he had always been big and solid and was capable of being surprising quick with ball in hand - going downhill at least!
Over the years, however, his contribution was as Fixtures Secretary for the senior teams a role through which he also came to represent he club interests on various Notts, Lincs and Derbys RFU committees.
Spud went on to note Grog’s contribution to the social side of the club action as David Swain’s accomplice while he duped unsuspecting victims with his bogus wall-sitting con trick as well as his drinking prowess in gulping down two pints of Guinness at great speed from a funnel and pipe.
Finally mention was made of his long battle with Covid when he was put into an induced coma for several weeks which was followed by a slow recovery when club members rallied to help with modifications to his house to make it better suited to his mobility needs at the time.
In conclusion, for all the above reasons Spud said that he thoroughly deserved his recognition as the Gascoines Volunteer of the Month!
Well done Grog! What a legend!
